Midland NOBCChE Science Bowl Competition

Students compete as teams of four in a "Toss-up/Bonus" question format.  In a given round, at least 20% of all questions asked will be about African-American scientists, engineers, inventors and their work. 

 

Participating teams with interest in attending the NOBCChE National conference in the Fall of 2025 may apply for financial support from the Midland Chapter to attend.

Who can compete?

Students enrolled in a public, parochial, or private school in grades 5 through 12

No more than four (4) students plus an alternate team member per team

How does each match work?

Each match consists of two eight (8) minute halves. 

 

The half ends either when the time has expired or after ten (10) "toss-up" questions have been completed, whichever comes first.

There is a two (2) minute break between halves

What types of questions can be expected?

Questions can come from the following subjects: physical science, life science, earth science, engineering, and math.

At least 20% of all questions asked will be about African-American scientists, engineers, inventors and their work.

 

Toss-up questions are worth four (4) points each.

Bonus questions are worth a total of ten (10) points each and asked after a toss-up question has been properly answered.

Is there a specific dress code?

Typical dress ranges from t-shirts to business polo shirts.

We recommend teams dress uniformly.

Science Bowl Registration

The Midland Chapter of the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) invites you to participate in its Great Lakes Regional Science Bowl competition. Each science bowl team is required to have four members and can have one alternate member. Additionally, participating teams with interest in attending the NOBCCHE National conference, may apply for financial support from the Midland Chapter to attend.

 

NOBCChE’s Mission is to build an eminent cadre of people of color in science and technology. Twenty percent of the questions will be related to black history facts associated with science and technology. Each team is strongly encouraged to have diverse ethnic representation, thereby reflecting, and aiding in the fulfillment of NOBCChE’s mission.
